It is with sadness that we report the death on 9th October of Neville Collier.

Neville was a former Wolf Cub (Cub Scout) Leader then Group Scout Leader at 1st Withington and eventually District Commissioner of South East Manchester, having started at 1st Withington as a Boy Scout in the 1940s.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Annual General Meeting

This year the Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday, 9th July at 7.30pm at Fuel Cafe Bar in Withington village.

All parents, carers and anyone else interested in the continuing success of the Group should attend.

Open Day!!

As part of Scout Community Week we are holding a

OPEN DAY AND BBQ

on Saturday, 19th May 1-4pm

We’ll be serving food and drink (hot drinks, soft drinks) all afternoon.

There will be fun and games for the all the family and a chance to see the latest improvements to the hut.

Come along and support your local scout group! We look forward to welcoming everyone!

Operation Impact!!

Days before our Centenary Open Day dozens of students volunteers descended on our scout hut armed with paint brushes and rollers. It was all part of Operation Impact, a community volunteering programme run by the University of Manchester.

The students painted the main hall and the rear of the hut (previously blighted with graffiti) as well as clearing the garden of rubbish and making wooden planters. Many of the eager workers lived in Withington and were keen to contribute to their community.

Operation Impact will continue to work with the Scout Group on others projects and we welcome their support. Thanks.

Cubs and Beavers camp out: pictures

At the end of September our Beavers and Cubs had their first ever camp out. Just as a trial, they spent the night in the Scout Hut’s back garden… and had a great time. With a roaring camp fire and a sing-song before bed, they got a taster for more ambitious trips in the future. Thanks to all the leaders, volunteers and parents who made it all possible.

MEC clean up our garden

Watch the short slideshow to see what happens when volunteers from MEC, a media company in Manchester, come down to our hut for the day. They had to get the place ready for 36 Beavers and Cubs coming down in the evening for their first experience of camping under canvas.

Thanks so much to them all, to parents Juliette, Rachel and Dave, who also helped. The Community Foundation in Manchester co-ordinated the event (and supplied the T-shirts!), thanks.

Another Exciting Clean-up Day!

Last time we cleared out the storeroom and found some wonderful old relics, most of which found their way to the tip! We’re doing another one on Saturday, 30th July from 10am until 3pm, (and if we need it, again on the 27th August). So, postpone the supermarket trip, bring down your toolbox and Marigolds and get stuck in for a few hours to get our Scout Hut in better shape. It’s good fun!

Thirty-seven beavers, cubs and scouts braved the scorching Withington heat today to complete the annual sponsored bike ride. With parents in tow to administer first aid and cold drinks, the young people all surpassed their own expectations and raised hundreds of pounds for the Scout Group. Here are some pictures. We’ll update this post in a week or so with the final sponsorship figure. (It was over £1300!!) Thanks to all all took part and their support teams!

What’s this? Cubs and scouts serving sausages to yellow-vested builders outside our hut?! Yes, it was all part of the Wates Community Day 2011 when dozens of Wates’ employees descended on the hut to renovate our two toilets and make a new accessible one… all for free! But they didn’t stop with the tiling, painting and grouting… they also cut down our unruly hedge with a chainsaw and got down on all fours to weed the tarmac!

Our scouts and cubs lent a hand where they could (they were off school for a training day) and made sausage sarnies for lunch. Well done to them.

So, thank you Wates Living Space and especially to Mike Smith who coordinated the work from start to finish.
