Cubs and Beavers camp out: pictures 10/10/2011 | By Jonathan Allerton At the end of September our Beavers and Cubs had their first ever camp out. Just as a trial, they spent the night in the Scout Hut’s back garden… and had a great time. With a roaring camp fire and a sing-song before bed, they got a taster for more ambitious trips in the future. Thanks to all the leaders, volunteers and parents who made it all possible.
MEC clean up our garden 24/09/2011 | By Jonathan Allerton Watch the short slideshow to see what happens when volunteers from MEC, a media company in Manchester, come down to our hut for the day. They had to get the place ready for 36 Beavers and Cubs coming down in the evening for their first experience of camping under canvas. Thanks so much to them all, to parents Juliette, Rachel and Dave, who also helped. The Community Foundation in Manchester co-ordinated the event (and supplied the T-shirts!), thanks.
Another Exciting Clean-up Day! 16/07/2011 (updated 16/07/2011) | By Jonathan Allerton Last time we cleared out the storeroom and found some wonderful old relics, most of which found their way to the tip! We’re doing another one on Saturday, 30th July from 10am until 3pm, (and if we need it, again on the 27th August). So, postpone the supermarket trip, bring down your toolbox and Marigolds and get stuck in for a few hours to get our Scout Hut in better shape. It’s good fun! Last time we sorted out the storeroom...
“Remember: it’s not a race!” 03/07/2011 (updated 08/09/2011) | By Jonathan Allerton Thirty-seven beavers, cubs and scouts braved the scorching Withington heat today to complete the annual sponsored bike ride. With parents in tow to administer first aid and cold drinks, the young people all surpassed their own expectations and raised hundreds of pounds for the Scout Group. Here are some pictures. We’ll update this post in a week or so with the final sponsorship figure. (It was over £1300!!) Thanks to all all took part and their support teams!
Thank you Wates for our new toilets! 28/06/2011 | By Jonathan Allerton What’s this? Cubs and scouts serving sausages to yellow-vested builders outside our hut?! Yes, it was all part of the Wates Community Day 2011 when dozens of Wates’ employees descended on the hut to renovate our two toilets and make a new accessible one… all for free! But they didn’t stop with the tiling, painting and grouting… they also cut down our unruly hedge with a chainsaw and got down on all fours to weed the tarmac! Our scouts and cubs lent a hand where they could (they were off school for a training day) and made sausage sarnies for lunch. Well done to them. So, thank you Wates Living Space and especially to Mike Smith who coordinated the work from start to finish. Here are some pictures, thanks to our Group Scout Leader, Sharon:
Camping Trip: pictures 07/06/2011 (updated 10/06/2011) | By Jonathan Allerton The Scouts and Cubs went camping last weekend (3rd-5th June) to Linnet Clough in Mellor, near Stockport. A good time was had by all. Check out the first batch of our pictures. Scouts and Cubs: please write something for this web page. A few lines or a whole story about your experiences of the camp. Email to len@lengrant.co.uk and see your writing on this blog! This from scout, Bethany Wesley: I feel that scout camp gave me the chance to mix with other people my age that went to different scouts. It was so funny I loved it when we were all dancing around the camp fire singing ‘Jhonkanakanaka to ni ay’, it was just a great experience. There was a great range of activities for every one to join in: shooting traversing wall climbing wall pedal cars high ropes low ropes canoeing archery and much much more The camp was on a big field where we were doing different activities, on the saturday morning my two favourites were when we had to put marmite on our nose and then I had to pass a chocolate button with my nose to the next person I also liked the one were you had to stick your hands in gooey mess and find pieces of red card it reminded me of I’m a celebrity get me out of here, ha. This from cub, Ruby Porter: I loved going camping with cubs It was brilliant. I liked all the activities except from the climbing wall because it was to high up. The shop was good to the sweets tasted nice. I also liked sharing a tent with Phillipa , Ciara, Emma and Anna. I made a new friend called Bethany. The food was lovely I hated it when it rained. Here’s some more pictures: are you on them?
Anyone for a geranium? 22/05/2011 | By Jonathan Allerton The gardens of Withington and the surrounding area should be looking much more colourful in the next few weeks as hundreds of bedding plants were recently distributed as part of the scout plant sale. Trays of seedlings were unloaded at the hut on Thursday night, collated and delivered to those who had kindly supported this annual fund-raiser. The group made a profit in excess of £400 so thanks to all involved. "Hurry up with that camera... this is heavy!"
Beavers meet our PCSO: pictures 03/05/2011 | By Jonathan Allerton Just before Easter our local Police Community Support Officer came in to visit the Beavers. He gave a talk to the boys and girls and let each Beaver try on his special waistcoat complete with radio and torch… all good fun!
Scouts Sleepover: pictures 06/04/2011 | By Jonathan Allerton A camp fire sing song; a late night movie with takeaway pizza; and a sleepover in the toasty clubhouse now the central heating has been installed… what bliss for the 1st Withington Scouts. As part of their conservation badge the scouts then spent the next morning at Chorlton Water Park identifying wild birds, reptiles and insects. Thanks to scout, Bethany Wesley for taking these pictures… …and a big thank you to leaders, Dan, Jason and Martin for a fun-filled adventure… everyone loved it.
Central Heating Goes In 30/03/2011 | By Jonathan Allerton This week central heating engineers have been hard at work fitting a new central heating system for our Scout Hut. Every room will now have a radiator and, in future, we will be able to set the heating so the hut is warmed up before each meeting. Bliss. Thanks again to the Clothworkers’ Foundation for the grant which has made this work possible. Work underway to fit new heating
